In doubts about when to go to Santiago, Chile, and if there is a better time to travel there? The good news is that the Chilean capital is a destination that can be visited year-round, but each season is a different experience.
It all depends on what you expect to find in the city. For example, if you want to see snow, you have to go in the winter. Do you prefer heat? Go in the summer! If you go in search of the grapevine vines, you can even participate in the grape harvest, the end of summer and the beginning of autumn is a good time.
Below we talk about each of these travel profiles!
WHEN TO GO TO SANTIAGO DE CHILE
The seasons of the year in Chile happen in the same period as in Brazil, ie if it is summer here is summer there and so on. In hotter months, thermometers can reach 30 ° C in Santiago, but the lows are always low by Brazilian standards, around 11 ° C even in the summer. Already in the winter, the thermometers can border the zero degrees of dawn in the capital, with afternoons a little more amenas.
The rainiest period runs from May to September, season that coincides with the winter season. But that does not mean you go get rain day and night. See how the average weather is throughout the year in the chart below:
TIP Although it is not mandatory in immigration in Chile, it is always advisable to make a Travel Insurance so that you have peace of mind with any unforeseen or health problems during your trip. It is cheap and guarantees your safety! You can quote on various insurers to find the best price on the market!
TO SEE SNOW IN SANTIAGO
Snow is a rare occurrence in the city itself, although it has snowed heavily in 2017. The Andes, which surrounds the Chilean capital, each year turns white in the winter. There is no guarantee, but there may already be snow in the mountains from June to September. So if you want to touch the ice, the best time if the doubt is when to go to Santiago is in this period, which coincides with the winter.
Usually agencies organize trips to the mountains where there is snow, or else you can visit some ski resort, such as Valle Nevado or Ski Portillo, for example. The ski season is also not something fixed in the calendar, it happens in the winter, but everything depends on the accumulation of snow.
THE HOTTEST DAYS IN SANTIAGO
Between October and April it rains very little in the city and is a good time to travel there due to the good weather and the most pleasant temperatures. What is missing even in this period is snow!
Between December and February it can be very hot, with thermometers around 30ºC in the afternoon, which is the ideal temperature for you to schedule a boat trip to Viña del Mar and Valparaiso, on the coast, although they can be visited at any time if you do not mind the icy wind. Getting into the sea even is difficult by our standards even in the summer.]
TO VISIT THE WINES
Wineries receive tourists year-round, except when they are closed on some holidays (learn more below). But if you want to find the greenworms and even participate in the harvest, it’s good if you plan to go in the summer and early fall. In the colder months they are almost alone with the boughs on display, but it is a beautiful setting.
HOLIDAYS IN CHILE
On holidays, a lot closes in Santiago, even restaurants. The main ones are: New Year, Passion Friday, Easter, Labor Day (01/05), Fiestas Patrias (18 and 19/09) and Christmas.
Carnival is not a holiday and if you plan to travel there everything will be working. The New Year’s Eve has some parties, but the fireworks and entertainment take place on the coast in Valparaiso and Viña del Mar.
The good thing is that if you intend to spend a Brazilian holiday in Chile, you can schedule for some that do not “hit” with theirs, like Carnival, Tiradentes, Corpus Christi, Independence Day, Our Lady Aparecida, Finados, Proclamação da República , among others in your city.
AND PATAGONIA AND ATACAMA?
I already traveled to Patagonia in the winter and I do not recommend it. It’s good that there’s more chance of catching snow, but it rains a lot! Of the ten days that I spent there ten were of rain. So if you go there, it’s best to choose spring and summer, when the weather is more friendly.
If you intend to go to Atacama after Santiago, this is another destination that you can visit all year. Rain is something very, very rare in the driest desert in the world. In winter it is cold, with negative temperatures, but on the other hand mountains and volcanoes are with their snowy peaks. Already in the summer, despite the cold at night, the thermometers can reach 40ºC, but the average is 25ºC.
WHERE TO STAY IN CHILEAN CAPITAL
My favorite regions to stay in Santiago are in the Central area, mainly in the neighborhoods of Providencia and Lastarria. I find these neighborhoods charming, with a lot of commerce, besides being close to the sights. We already posted a post with suggestions of hotels where we stayed in the city.
